Is it worth installing a new Kitchen?

Hi Whatprice!
I live in a 2-bed flat in south-east London, and we have a pretty small kitchen (11ft x 6ft, I think...). It's the least attractive room in the flat, and definitely needs a lick of paint, but we're toying with installing new units, maybe moving the sink, etc. My worry is that we can't do any of the work ourselves, so it'll be a pricey job- is there any evidence that a new kitchen will bump resale value? We're looking to move in the next few months...

Tricky! My sister was actually told not to bother doing this by her estate agent, but I know other people who say that even if it doesn't necessarily allow you to set a higher asking price, a new kitchen will help sell your house quickly, and help you get closer to the original asking price (if you see what I mean)!
Have you had any quotes for the kitchen? Doesn't sound like it would be a very big job for a room that size...

I would reckon that if you give it a good lick of paint, that will help a lot. You could also just replace the doors on the existing units, much easier than replacing the whole thing, and it will really liven it up I'm sure!

With the right primer, re painting the doors will smarten it up no end, use either a contrasting colour to the walls, or go for white, your best bet would be a satin finish.
Cost wise, reckon on about £40 or £50 at the most.

what sort of primer do you reccomend Welsh Decorator (welcome to the forum BTW). I have looked at sanding down kitchen doors before and then painting, but it really didn't work very well!
