I assume root canal (RCT) is on a molar(big back) tooth.

can be very complex and time consuming: referal to specialist will give best chance of success. 800 is expensive but not unheard of particually for a specialist.

get a second opinion: most nhs dentists will not do molar root canal on the nhs because of the complexity and time involved - the nhs pays so little for an RCT that dentist will work at a terriffic loss with a poor chance of success and extraction is a viable alternative!

try phoning around for a better price privately: private charges vary quite a bit, just say you need a root canal doing and what is the price - most places will also charge extra for initial examinaion.

bear in mind these are only general comments and each case is different.
