Well with a fully private dentist you could expect to pay between £650 and £800 depending on the type of crown. May get a discount for having two done Huh

With an NHS dentist you would pay £198

Many thanks.  Thankfully I am with an HNS Dentist.  Does anyone know what is actually involved in having a crown, I am a complete baby when it comes to going to the dentist! Embarrassed

w w w.whatprice.co.uk/dentist/crown.html

remove the spaces from the www or go to main whatprice page and search for 'dental crown' no quotes.

I used to be scared of it, after bad experience as child. Now I find I can relax! In a way I lie back and think of England...

Seriously I just stare at the ceiling and think of anything trying to take my mind of what is going on. It doesn't hurt so its more of avoiding anxiety/panic more than anything else. Most dentists are used to dealing nervous patients. Be sure to have a word before the treatment starts. The worst thing for me is a feeling of choking on my own spit! So, if I feel I need to swallow I raise my hand and the treatments stops allowing me to swallow and re-group.

Incidentally, there is a caveat to the £198

"Note that you only pay one dental charge even if you need to visit more than once to complete a course of dentist treatment.

If you need more treatment at the same charge level (e.g. an additional filling) within two months of seeing your dentist, this is free of charge."

So, if the dentist decides to do one crown now and another in 2.5months you may have to pay £396 in total! Ask beforehand. I'm not sure whether it will count as one course of treatment. They will give you a quote for the work in writing.

This is taken from the NHS site about what to expect from your NHS dentist.

"
Carry out a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth and gums.

Explain your treatment options and let you know what can be provided on the NHS or privately.

Make sure you know how much your NHS and private treatment will cost.

Provide you with a written treatment plan (including costs) if you are receiving a mix of NHS and private care.

Display a poster about NHS charges in the waiting room.

Discuss with you how often you need to attend (if you have good oral health it's unlikely you will need a check up every six months).

Provide a leaflet with information about the practice and the services available. "

Hope this helps and best of luck with the teeth.
