Do we pay too much for our beer, lager, cider or stout?

Is it too expensive at the pub and too cheap at the supermarket?

maybe it should be banned altogether?

With beer across UK now averaging / topping £3 a pint, why not visit the Czech Republic?   In central Prague pubs, a good quality pint (OK half a litre) is still no more than 60 or 70 pence.  It's even cheaper, and just as good, in the suburbs and outside Prague.

The thing I'm surprised about it is not just the prices.. but the poor quality of beer realted to the price! How Fosters and Budweiser ever got a foothold in the UK is beyond me... pub chains have committed treason by letting these pithy lagers into the plastic pubs. Why does the UK get such a bad deal.. most lagers at 4%.. what a joke. I've been on holiday to Prague and definitely recommend that as the best drinking experience.. most people who've never been to anywhere but Ibiza in Europe just don't know how pathetic our drinking options have become.

Me? I moved to Thailand, to work - and get value for money. Singha and Heineken (5%, only proper strenths over here) are usually 90p to a pound a pint. The best beer comes from Laos -Beerlao.. which can go from between 50p to 80p a bottle depending on happy hours.. it's about 25p in Laos itself. Glad I moved, the UK market is just designed to siphon money from your pocket!

Here in Vancouver in BC Canada the price of a pub pint is around $5 Canadian or 2.25 UK pounds. The selection is generally good with many local, small brewery beers on the menu. Not too many UK brews, though. Some pubs carry draft Guinness, some carry a few select UK Ales, but these pubs are hard to find. All of the UK/Ireland brews go for, at least, $6 a pint, some as high as $7.

Beer is always cheaper (a lot cheaper) if bought at the liquor stores (government run). Strangely, the 500 ml cans (a little less than a pint) of German, Dutch, Belgium, Czech, Russian etc. brews  are cheaper than the Canadian beers - even the big chains like Labatt's and Molson. Only $2 a can for these.

A 24 pack of 355 ml cans of Labatt's Blue goes for about $35 (a 6 pack for around $10). Personally, I hardly ever drink Molson or Labatt's. They tend to have a slightly sweet aftertaste common to N American mass produced lagers - not to my personal liking. Kokanee, is okay. Sleemans is even better.

All the lager is 5% alcohol, some 5.5%. There's some extra-strength stuff, too - either local or from Belgium or Germany - at 7.5%. All at about the same price as the regular stuff.

I live in Glastonbury and pay the most exorbitant prices for beer. My local pub now charges £3.80 for a pint of Guinness and £3.30 for a pint of Wadworth 6X. This is after the VAT increase but I have been told today that the brewery is now putting up its own prices with immediate effect - reason given is increase in transport charges. I guarantee that a pint of Guinness will be £4 per pint by the summer. Most of the 11 pubs in the town are already struggling and this could be the final straw. I don't like drinking at home on my own but at these prices I will probably be doing so. The end of the English pub is nigh!
