I had an upper denture in April this year.  Most of my upper teeth had already been removed and I had 4 taken out and the denture fitted immediately.  I had one tooth left which they used to help support the denture.  Cost with extractions was about £350 which seemed a good price as my dentist is private.  We had already agreed I would have a cheaper denture fitted initially to save money and a better one when my gums had finished shrinking.  The first few days it was really painful to take the denture out and put it in but after a week it was fine.  The denture wasn't very good, the teeth looked ok but the colour wasn't good and the palate was awful, it was very thick and my tongue didn't have much room so my talking was different.  After a few weeks when my gums had shrunk it felt really big and kept falling down and I had to keep using fixative to hold it up which I hated.  Just had a new private denture for £500 and it is much better, the teeth look really natural (a couple of people have commented on how much nicer and whiter they look) and the metal palate is small and very thin which makes talking and eating so much easier and I now have more 'taste' when I eat and I don't have to use fixative as the grip is very good.  There were problems with the fit to begin with and it had to be sent back to the technican to be altered and it is much better now although it still isn't perfect and when I talk using the letter 'S' is does sound a little hissy which my dentist said she couldn't do anything about.  I wasn't happy to hear this as with my job, I have to talk alot.  My dentist is very good but isn't a denture specialist and I think how your denture fits is all down to the dentist and whether the impressions are good enough for the technican to work on.  And the better the technician, the better the denture. I've had my new denture 5 weeks and although they are much better than my first ones, they are still not perfect. I'm now going to see a proper denture consultant who does nothing else but dentures and has the technicans actually working in his clinic and uses 3D technology (whatever that is).  He also does denture implants which I'm going to ask about.  No idea of the cost but hoping I can afford it.  As a female I want my dentures to look and let me talk like my own teeth.  I would say keep your dentist as just your dentist but go to a denture specialist for really good dentures.
