My local Tescos has gone up to 102p a litre, but no fear if I spend of £50 in hte shop I get a 5p discount taking it down to 97p a litre bargain!

Although if I think back to two weeks ago petrol was 97p a litre and I didn't have to spend £50 in the shop to get this! Price fixing maybe?

Well the prices are all overinflated and do not match the rise and fall of oil prices.
The prices should be the same all over the uk and not cheaper in scotland or as you enter the london area.
I have heard that the government can with ease reduce the prices by 9p a litre with no real consequence.

We at whatprice took a good look at how oil prices affect petrol prices, and you'll be suprised to hear that the petrol DOES actually follow oil prices! There is a pretty good correlation, so good infact that we were able to predict the £5 a gallon diesel prices we are now paying back in October 07. The data showed that is oil went above $100 a barrel then diesel would inevitably follow to £5 a gallon

With oil decreasing to around $80 a barrel we are starting to see fuel prices drop back again

[/qPETROL PRICES

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it We are hitting 123.9 a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying 2.00 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... ..

THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference . If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso

I've refused to pay any the current extortionate prices until something is done. I've lmanaged to lose a few pounds in walking over the past few weeks, so maybe this is a blessing in disguise for some.  Smiley

If you are lunky enough to have an Asda nearby and you pay with an Asda credit card you get 2p a litre off.
Not a lot but it all adds up.
Where I live Asda is also the cheapest so the 2p does make a difference.

This might upset a few people! I am an Ex-pat living in Mexico. The petrol prices have not gone up much here in the last five years that I know of. I now pay $7.1pesosMexicanos for a litre, that´s 34pence litre. Yes, people earn less here, and the price is relatively high for them, but the point is that the price has NOT changed much in many years, and the prices are the same all over the country.
I left the UK last July (2007) and petrol was a mere 86p/litre (approx). THIS EQUATES TO A RISE OF 48.8% (at 1.28GBP/litre). I returned to visit, and I was staggered by the change in price of ALL the goods, not just fuel.
READ THIS CAREFULLY.. YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF IN EUROPE, AND EVEN MORESO IN THE UK. THE GOVERNMENT IS MAKING A REAL KILLING. Can you not see what is being done to you? The governments are using ´control by fear´tactics, not new by any means. The Brits are not good at complaining when they receive poor service, shoody goods, high prices, etc., but I thought the English were better educated, and more free-thinking, than to allow themselves to be conned in this day and age.

Good morning Recycleman and welcome to the forum,

from what I know Mexico subsidises petrol costs

http://www.ftd.de/karriere_management/business_english/:Business%20English%20Mexico/382702.html

The other effect of this is that it keeps inflation and hence other prices down. Until recently it has worked very well but with very high oil prices this may change.

You are right though, we are taking it too easily (not sure what we should do). The other day my dad was talking about how it was fairly cheap at so and so garage at 111p per litre!!! Staggering how quickly we have come to accept prices significantly more than £1 per litre.

Personally, I see the control by fear tactic coming up a l lot. From the widespread introduction of CCTV to anti-terror laws and high tax on travel for environmental reasons - when clearly it not enough to actually effect whether someone travels to work or not if they have no other choice than by car.

I agree with the subsidies comment, but this (I believe) does not apply to petroleum products. The USA has been flooding Mexico with cheap maize, and they are forcing Mexican farmers to grow their GM seed-maize. In oaxaxa, there are many micro-climates, and, as such, a very wide variety of indigenous maiz crops, which have been staple diet crops for thousands of years, are in danger of being lost forever. (funny how everything seems to relate to the USA, and their greed for power, money and control¡). That´s another story¡
Anyway, the thing is.... we (the Prols) elect the governments (in most countries) to represent us and our interests, yet, somehow, the tables always turn, and the "tail wags the dog"¡
Petrol here has gone up 1.4% (not 14%), if we see the rise here as you have in the UK, I have no doubt that another revolution will be on it´s way¡
Hasta luago, y tenga cuidado.
